HARLEY-DAVIDSON UK

Fellow Harley-Davidson® enthusiasts!November-2009

Fellow Harley-Davidson® enthusiasts!

Welcome to the H-D UK & Eire Ezine bumper October and November issue

As I approach 13 years with Harley-Davidson, I still wake up and feel inspired. We are a unique brand, second-to-none. We build great motorcycles, but we make possible so much more.

In my time with the company I have been privileged to experience an extensive amount of traveling with Harley-Davidson, meeting H.O.G.® members and Harley-Davidson riders throughout the United States, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. I never cease to be impressed by the dedication, friendship and unity I encounter.

As winter sweeps our part of the globe, I am saddened to know that motorcycles around the UK and Eire are being reduced to hibernation. Riders are hauling covers over their bikes, mentally acknowledging the end of another season of good times and good riding, and starting the long, boring wait for good weather to return. You may also have been waiting to receive your October eZine to keep you up to date and in tune with Harley-Davidson in the absence of riding. We apologise for the delay in getting it to you but…

We’ve been busy putting together an exciting offer for UK riders to join a South Africa tour and ride in-season when it’s off-season in this part of the world. What a way to spend a week this winter! I can only encourage you to look past the cold and see the potential. You have access to a continent that offers what many in the world envy.

Or - talk to your local dealership to find out how to make yourself and your bike comfortable in the weather here at home. Maybe it’s time to start thinking ahead and looking at the possibilities for your dream bike.

Read on, source that extra inspiration you need and then, get going! Don’t be afraid to get really creative and remember it’s always summer somewhere in the world! Start planning your next adventure now!

Together, we are an impressive family. Our common ground is the territory we cover, and the lifestyle we live for. The highlights I personally have experienced throughout my time with H-D, in both a professional and personal capacity, seem too immeasurable to put into words. Thankfully, if you’re reading this, you understand exactly how it is, and like me, you look forward to more of the same!

Ride safe,

Stuart

Beat the VATNovember-2009

Beat the VAT

With VAT set to rise as soon as we set foot in 2010, now's the time to take advantage of the lower rate while you still can

Thinking of upgrading to a larger or more exciting bike? Toying with the idea of an extra-special model? Or tempted by a model you've test-ridden, but haven't quite made your own? It's time to get off the fence and make that bike yours, or you'll pay for it later – literally!

We've all enjoyed the friendlier prices that the lower rate of VAT has offered us, but these days are now coming to an end. On January 1, 2010, VAT is expected to rise from its current rate, 15 per cent, to the previous rate of 17.5 per cent.

Unfortunately, this means that the recommended price of all motorcycles, regardless of brand, will increase instantly. And, what's more, this will affect motorcycles ordered before the new year but delivered in January, so timing is everything.

Motorcycles that are ordered now and delivered in December will escape the increased charge, but if you've placed an order and the bike is not delivered until after the increase is in place, you will be subject to it.

So, act swiftly to avoid disappointment and unnecessary extra charges. Call into your dealer now for advice on the latest date by which you can order your new bike but still escape the charge.

Stay up past bedtimeNovember-2009

Stay up past bedtime

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you have to put your bike to bed. Far from it, in fact. Get down to your dealership and make the best of the winter

With shorter days, rain, frost and wind, the winter months often discourage us from being out on our bikes, but there’s really no reason why that should be so. With a little work and the help of the skilled technicians at your Harley-Davidson® dealership, you’ll have no problem staying out on the road.

Step one – Prepare
You know how important it is to keep your bike serviced. You don’t need us to tell you that. But did you know that the Harley-Davidson Winter and Corrosion Protection Service can be the best protection you can give your pride and joy to get it ready for the bad weather? With a full clean, anti-corrosion treatment and extensive 99-point wheel-to-wheel check, plus an oil and filter change, you’ll be ready for the elements.

Even better, the dealer will valet and remove any remaining treatment from the bike when the weather begins to improve. If your bike really isn’t fit for the winter months, and you’re worried about storing it yourself, many dealerships offer a collection, storage and delivery service. Contact your local dealer to find out more.

Step two – Protect
It’s not just your bike that needs looking after – make sure you keep yourself warm and dry with the right gear from Harley-Davidson® MotorClothes®. The range features versatile and high-visibility gear, as well as functional gear with FXRG® protection. Waterproof, windproof options are available, with additional waterproof layers to slip on in case it really starts to come down.

Gloves include styles with Gore-tex® lining, to make sure your hands keep warm and comfortable. You can also find gloves featuring battery-powered warming elements – an added luxury that can make all the difference some days!

Of course, there are myriad options when it comes to layers, plus wind-resistant masks and balaclavas. For both men and women, your dealership will have everything you need to keep cosy and dry.

Step three – Proceed
When it comes to modifying your bike for the winter, Harley-Davidson riders are spoilt for choice. It can be hard to know where to start! Upgrade your lights for greater visibility, with our High Intensity Discharge Headlamp System. This system gives a full spread of blue/white light, plus a separate halogen high beam – a focused shaft of light down the centre of the road ahead.

And of course, the biggest difference can be the cold. Banish that with heated grips, a heated seat, and a detachable screen to deflect wind.

Armed with these extras, you can be free to ride all winter long. And what’s more, right now you’ll find many of these things on offer at your dealership. Check out the offers near you! Whatever else, this winter, your Harley-Davidson dealership is the place to be.

Fly & RideNovember-2009

Fly & Ride

Taking a H.O.G.® holiday is made easier with Fly & Ride, the system that allows you to rent your dream bike to tour abroad, with locations across America, Europe, Australia and South Africa

For those coming to the UK and looking to rent a motorcycle from early 2010, the location has changed, and with it comes an extended rental period. Now, Guildford’s dealership will be rolling out the welcome wagon to overseas’ visitors when they arrive to try touring in the United Kingdom, with bikes available to rent from April through to October.

Guildford’s dealership, in Peasmarsh, Guildford, is little more than 30 miles from Heathrow and less than 25 miles from Gatwick, making it perfectly placed for visiting bikers. Guildford H-D's Aftersales Manager, Mike Wilson, commented: "we're in a very good site to start your tour from here. We're out in the sticks so there's no fighting your way out of town before you start riding!" However, the dealership's still close enough to the capital to be very easily accessible.

The Fly & Ride programme is yet another of the great benefits of H.O.G. membership, offering exclusive rental rates (inclusive of insurance) to H.O.G. members worldwide. If you’ve not taken advantage of it on your own trips, now’s the time. Whether you’ve got the trip of a lifetime planned, or just want to spend a little time in the saddle on a family holiday or business trip, it’s the way to go.

The team at Guildford will be there to welcome all new riders with open arms and, Mike laughed, "an open coffee machine!". If you’ve got friends coming to visit, don’t let them miss out on the hundreds of awe-inspiring biking roads that we are all so proud of in the UK. Wherever they’re coming from, they may think they’ve got the best biking roads in the world – prove them wrong.

Geordies take the long way roundNovember-2009

Geordies take the long way round

Riding from Newcastle to Land's End is a long enough ride as it is, but earlier this month, to raise money for a local hospital, the owners of Newcastle's Harley-Davidson® dealership decided to do just that, going via John O'Groats for good measure

Paul and Dave

Business partners paul O’Callaghan and David Hall, who took over the running of Newcastle’s only official Harley-Davidson® and Buell® showroom recently, were keen to establish a way to give something back to the local community. It was Julie Horsfield, the Chapter Director of the dealership’s sponsored H.O.G.® Chapter (Geordie), who formulated the idea after a chance meeting at a ferry terminal with the consultant who diagnosed her friend with breast cancer 12 years ago. They have now raised around £15,000 for the Breast Clinic Fund at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI).

The RVI would like to secure funds to pay for a Scinti scanner – a machine that minimises the extent of surgery required by patients by using an advanced lymph node detection process to identify the sentinel node.

To raise these funds, they set off on an ambitious ride from Newcastle to Land’s End via John O’Groats. Paul and David completed their epic journey on motorcycles supplied by Buell UK. They were accompanied by two colleagues from the Sandyford dealership, Allen Glasper and Eric Ree, along with Nick Colledge and Andrew McIndoe from Harley-Davidson & Buell UK, and Greg Holmes of Geordie Chapter. Cleveland police officers Kevin Keay and Mick Watson, who rode H-D police motorcycles on loan from Harley-Davidson UK, ensured the safety of the group throughout the trip.

Other additional supporting events have also been organised, including a Ladies of Harley® pink-themed ride-out to Linden Hall, which raised £520.

Paul commented: “We all have known people close to us, friends and loved ones, that have been touched by cancer in some form or another and this is something that David and I feel very passionate about in raising its profile and awareness in the UK.

“It was the most challenging thing I have ever done. My biggest thanks go to all those people who have given so generously in these tough economic times and those who gave us such a fantastic welcome. When we arrived over the Tyne Bridge and rode down under police escort to the Quayside, it was a truly emotional experience. Everything we had tried to do we had completed, and the turn-out was just amazing. We still have a way to go, but hopefully we can reach our £25,000 target.”

RVI Consultant Andy Griffiths says: “I am delighted that the team at Newcastle Harley-Davidson and Buell is dedicating its inspiring ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End to help us raise funds for our breast cancer care unit. The Scinti scanning equipment is an extremely important facility that benefits a large number of women with breast cancer, as it minimises the extent of surgery that our patients need during treatment.”

“The whole weekend was fantastic and a real test,” said David. “The help and support we’ve received has been tremendous. Special thanks to the Geordie Chapter for their fundraising efforts, to Nick Colledge and Andrew McIndoe for organising the Buells and Harley-Davidson police bikes, and Greg Holmes, our designated paramedic on the journey, for his excellent route planning. We also thank Mick and Kev from Cleveland Police for giving up their days off to join us and help us round the country safely.”

WSB star appears at Warr's

Warr's Harley-Davidson recently welcomed World Superbike (WSB) star Shane 'Shakey' Byrne as he came to collect his newest bike, and his first Harley-Davidson® motorcycle

Shane Byrne

Warr’s Harley-Davidson was delighted to present World Superbike Championship ace Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne with his new Harley-Davidson® motorcycle earlier this month. The London-born racer collected a VRSC™ Night Rod® Special, which was customised by experts at the famous King’s Road dealership.

Equipped with a 1250cc liquid-cooled Revolution® V-Twin engine, the Night Rod® Special is an exhilarating combination of style and power. The 2008 British Superbike Champion was thrilled to collect his new motorcycle, which belongs to the Harley-Davidson VRSC™ range, inspired by the brand’s rich racing heritage.

“Out on the track, I’m focused on chasing that last tenth of a second or the race win,” says Shane. “But when I’m out on the road, I want to kick back in style, totally relax and just enjoy myself.”

Dealership owner John Warr says: “Shakey fell in love with the Night Rod® Special after using the demo model a few months ago. We installed a black ceramic Rinehart 2-into-1 performance exhaust system along with a Hi-Flow air filter. A custom calibration for fuelling was achieved using a Screamin' Eagle®/Warr's Racing Pro Super Tuner. For the final Dark Custom touch, we added smoked turn signal lenses, and black handlebars and control levers.

“I tend to think he’ll be back for new foot pegs way before the first service and no doubt we will be customising further.”

To take a closer look at the Night Rod® Special and the full range of Harley-Davidson® motorcycles, please visit Warr’s Harley-Davidson, 611 Kings Road, London SW6 2EL, call 020 7736 2934 or visit its award-winning website, www.warrs.com

It's not over yet!November-2009

It's not over yet!

After 26 years of producing sports bikes, the Buell Motorcycles product line has been discontinued. But that doesn't mean the journey's come to an end…

Not wanting to abandon the loyal and loving fans Buell Motorcycles has amassed since 1998, Harley-Davidson will continue to provide support and replacement parts, honouring all guarantees. Even better, there are still a few select bikes around, ready to make one last generation of motorcycle lovers very happy indeed.

While production may have finished, there’s still a chance for you to get your hands on one of the final Buell® motorcycles built. And although these bikes won’t be around for long, you can be certain that our ongoing assured warranty support through the extensive Harley-Davidson® dealer network will be. Plus with guaranteed parts availability, there really has never been a better time to buy a Buell®.

Buell Motorcycle Company officials thanked the company’s customers, employees and dealers for an unforgettable ride, following this month’s announcement by Harley-Davidson, Inc. that it will discontinue the Buell® product line as part of Harley-Davidson’s go-forward business strategy.  The new long-term strategy aims to drive company growth through a focus of efforts and resources on the Harley-Davidson® brand.

A wholly owned subsidiary of Harley-Davidson, Inc. since 1998, Buell Motorcycle Company was founded in 1983 by Erik Buell and produced more than 135,000 motorcycles. Over the past 26 years, Buell motorcycles won numerous design accolades and awards, and countless races and championships around the world, including the AMA Pro Daytona SportBike championship in 2009. The decision was taken to discontinue the line in October of this year.

Come back for BikeFestNovember-2009

Come back for BikeFest

It's back, it's bigger and it's better than ever – don't miss BikeFest 2010!

One of the earliest big events in the biking calendar, Killarney's BikeFest, is not an event you want to miss. And this year, following the tremendous success of past events, it's extended for an extra day to allow more people more time to discover the area, the great riding and experience the incredible atmosphere of this event.

This year, the event will run for an extra day, taking place across the Irish bank holiday weekend of June 4-7, 2010. As in previous years, BikeFest 2010 will take place in Killarney, with the bike village located less than a mile from Killarney's town centre. The place to be if you want to be at the heart of the rally, test out a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle, grab a drink or something to eat or immerse yourself in the atmosphere. On Sunday, family-orientated entertainments and events are being organized for younger enthusiasts and those looking for a great family day out.

The trader area in the village will, as ever, include Harley-Davidson authorized dealerships, plus merchandise from Orange County Choppers and West Coast Choppers. Browse the stands and pick up some souvenirs.

For accommodation, it couldn't be easier to stay right in the action. The Bike Village is bordered on each side by hotels and apartments, all of which will be populated by rally-goers Visit the website to find out more and book your room!

Even better, no matter where you are in the UK or Eire, it's not too far away. Dig out a map, work out your route and ferry crossings, and enjoy the journey. With so many glorious biking roads in Ireland, you won’t be disappointed. See you there!
